About the Practice
As founder of the Huntsville Laser Center, Dr. William Mitchell was the first to perform LASIK in Huntsville, and the first to have a fixed-site VISX® excimer laser system in north Alabama. Dr. Mitchell, a board-certified ophthalmologist, is committed to providing his patients with the very latest and most technologically advanced procedures available today.
While conventional and custom LASIK continue to benefit millions, there are many with refractive errors that fall outside the parameters of which the laser can correct, leaving them no other alternative than to wear contacts or very thick glasses. Dr. Mitchell is the first surgeon in north Alabama to offer the Verisyse™ Phakic IOL, used to treat moderate to severe myopia (nearsightedness). The Verisyse™ lens has been used outside of the United States for nearly 20 years, and 150,000 procedures have been performed worldwide. Results prove the Verisyse™ design is safe and effective for very nearsighted people who are tired of thick glasses and are not candidates for LASIK. As technology advances, there will be other phakic IOLs available as well, giving patients even more options to choose from.
Dr. Mitchell also provides unique options for presbyopic patients (those patients 40 and above having difficulty with fine print). Presbyopic patients seeking to be free of glasses forever may be candidates for monovision LASIK, a method of correcting one eye for distance vision and one eye for near vision. For those not able to tolerate monovision, advances with intraocular lens implants such as ReSTOR® and Crystalens® are proving to be very successful. Again, Dr. Mitchell is on the forefront of technology, being the first surgeon in north Alabama to offer these exciting alternatives.
